VHP HANDHELD PROGRAMMER
This is an overview on the VHP diagnostics tuner. With this programmer, you can make changes to your existing stock PCM. Or, you can load one of the other 7 performance programs and modify them to fit the need of your particular application.

Real simple and easy to use. Just move the square blinking cursor using the
up/down arrow to select what you want to change. Then hit the "Y" to select it.
If you do not want to make any changes to that particular part of the
programming, hit the "N" and it will bypass that modification.
![]() After you have plugged the tuner in and downloaded your stock programming, you'll get this screen. Select "Tune Car" to make changes to PCM. Select "Get DTC Codes" if you have a Service Engine Soon light on or just want to see if there are any codes stored. |
![]() Next screen, you select to "Custom Tune Car" or "Return to Stock". You can use "Return to Stock" if you are getting a different car or taking it to the dealer for some work done. |
![]() First selection is the MPG Limiter. If your car has the MPH limiter set to 98mph, you can change it to 130 or UNLIMITED. Just make sure the tires are rated for the MPH you select. If you do not have the MPH limiter in your vehicle, then hit the "N" and proceed to the next step. |
![]() Next step will be "Correct Your Speedometer for Tire/Axle ratio. If you haven't made a rear gear change, or changed your tire height, then hit the "N" and it will skip this step. If you changed one or both, then hit the "Y". |
![]() If you have selected the speedometer correction, this will be the first screen. The "Change Rear Axle Gear Ratio to". Select the gear you have installed into the rear axle. Then hit the "Y". If you didn't change the rear axle gear, then hit the "N". Just because you select a different gear ratio, it doesn't change the gear in the axle. |
![]() Next screen will be the "Tire Height". If you have went to a taller/shorter tire than stock, you will measure from the ground to the top of the tire. Then select the appropriate height to the nearest .25". Or you can look up on places such as a tirerack.com to get the exact tire diameter. |
![]() Next is the "Cooling Fan Setting". you can select stock, 210* or 190*. Pick the desired temp you want the fans to turn on. Then hit "Y". |
![]() Now we get into the programming for power/drivability. First one up is the "Power Enrichment Level". This is where you make changes to add or take away fuel. You can change the percentage by -15%, -10%, -5%, 0%, +5%, +10%, and +15%. |
![]() Now we move onto the "Shift Spark Advance". This will shift the entire spark curve -10%, 0%, +10%. In some cases this can be as much as 3*. Depending on what the timing table has programmed into it. |
![]() Now we come to selecting the "Engine Tune Need". You can choose to use/modify the stock programming. Or any of 7 other performance programs.
Description of the performance programs can be found at the end of this document. |
![]() For those with larger than stock cams, you will like this one. You can raise the idle rpm up so it won't die out on you. Or surge trying to find an idle. Increases are +50, +100, +150, +200, +250, and +300 rpm overstock. |
![]() "Increase The Injector Size" is done by percentage. From 0%-120% in 10% increments. If you have changed injectors, this is where you do it. you figure the percentage change from stock, then select it. For instance, on the LS1 you go from the stock 28 lbs/hr injectors to 36 lbs/hr. Doing the math, 28 divided by 36 = .777. Subtract that by 100 and you get your percent change of 23%. so, you would select 30%. If you need to add/remove a small amount of fuel, that's where the "Power Enrichment" feature is used. NOTE: increasing injector size without adding the injectors WILL NOT add more fuel. It will decrease the amount of time the injector is open for a given rpm/load. This results in DECREASING the amount of fuel the engine needs for the given rpm/load in the fuel table. |
![]() These next two are for the automatic guys. "Enhance Trans Shifting" raises the stock shift points about 300 rpms. Even on part throttle, it delays the shifting about 300 rpms. For the manual transmission vehicles, you select the performance feature here to get rid of the CAGS, or skip shift. |
![]() "Enhance Trans Firmness" is just that. Makes the shift between gears less delayed. And it will shift harder. This can extend transmission life because of less slippage between shifts. |
![]() And finally, "Install Your Selected Tuning?" Hit "Y" and it will reprogram your PCM. Hit "N" and it will not make any changes at all. |
Other features of the tuner that
doesn't come up is it gets rid of the torque management feature in the
automatic vehicles. Automatic fault adjustment will correct tuning if a poor
grade of fuel is used with high octane demand program. More
